Global Green USA's Solar Activities in
New Orleans
Global Green House
The first house to be completed in Global Green's Holy Cross Project, has a 5.3 kilowatt rooftop photovoltaic solar array that provides all of the building's electrical energy. The model green house, which currently serves as a Visitors Center, was one of the first net metered buildings in New Orleans. The energy produced by the solar panels feeds directly into the utility grid, making the meter "run backwards" and providing a credit that translates into "net zero" energy use for the home. The house, located at 409 Andry Street in the Holy Cross Neighborhood of New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward, is open to the public for tours every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11am to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm.
Resource Center
A working solar photovoltaic model is on display at the organization's Green Building Resource Center, and is brought to various festivals and events. Additionally, information on solar water heaters and solar tax credits is available at the Resource Center, which is open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 3pm and Saturdays by appointment. The Center is located downtown, on the St. Charles streetcar line, at 841 Carondelet Street.
Build it Back Green
Global Green's newest program is designed to assist recipients of federal rebuilding grants to incorporate non-toxic building materials, energy and water efficiency, and storm resistant measures into their renovations. Build it Back Green (or BIBG) will provide outreach and technical assistance to at least 10,000 Road Home grant recipients in Orleans Parish. A series of fact sheets is being developed on green building techniques and incentives, which will include information on solar water heaters and renewable energy tax credits.
Green Schools Initiative
Global Green received a Bush Clinton Katrina Fund grant to promote green schools in New Orleans and Louisiana through statewide policy work and outreach and model schools in Orleans Parish. Two of the schools will be built to be "PV Ready," so that photovoltaic panels can be added at any later date and easily hooked up to the grid and/or a battery backup. Wilson Elementary School in New Orleans' Broadmoor neighborhood will be the first to receive solar panels, through an allocation to Global Green from the DOE Solar America Cities program.
